Background

The International Masterson Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy has evolved from the works of Dr. James F. Masterson, an internationally prominent psychiatrist/psychoanalyst who passed away in 2010. Dr. Masterson was an IABMCP Diplomate and member of The Academy’s Professional Advisory Council for many years. He is a recognized authority with regard to the psychotherapy of the personality disorders, the developer of what has come to be known as the Masterson approach to psychoanalytic psychotherapy and the author of a number of well known books that have been translated into many languages.

Locations

The International Masterson Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy currently maintains chapters/centers on the USA East Coast (New York City), the USA West Coast (San Francisco), Florida (Winter Park), England, Canada (British Columbia), Australia and South Africa. It is likely that additional locations will be opened within the coming years.

Programs

At the USA East Coast and West Coast Centers 18-month and 3-year postgraduate certificate programs are offered to a limited number of qualified applicants. These programs aim to promote a thorough understanding of Masterson’s Developmental, Self and Object Relations Approach and its applications to normal human development, psychopathology, and the basic precepts of psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy, with a special focus on providing therapists with the requisite knowledge and skill required to treat patients who suffer from personality disorders (also classified as disorders of the self). In recent years, significant findings from neurobiology and attachment theory have been integrated into the Masterson Approach’s theoretical framework.

A variety of shorter programs (one day to one week in length), introducing mental health professionals to the Masterson approach to psychoanalytic psychotherapy, are available at Masterson centers throughout the world. Some of these programs deal with specific topics, on-going case studies and clinical supervision. Programs can sometimes be developed in response to specific requests.
