The Academy currently offers three categories of membership, as follows:

Diplomate Status
This is the highest level of membership in The Academy. The requirements for IABMCP Diplomate Status are quite rigorous and include, but are not restricted to, licensing/certification/registration for independent practice, 7500 hours of clinical experience, and a minimum of five years of acceptable post-graduate professional experience. Diplomate Status is currently being offered in four areas:

  • Behavioral Medicine

  • Professional Counseling
  • Professional Psychotherapy
  • Chemical Dependency Counseling

A more complete list of requirements for IABMCP Diplomate Status can be obtained by clicking Requirements for Diplomate Status

Clinical Membership
This second category of membership is available to professionals who are interested in The Academy and who share The Academy's goals and objectives, but who do not yet fulfill all the criteria for IABMCP Diplomate Status. Requirements for Clinical Membership generally include an appropriate graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, present employment in the mental health profession or an appropriate related area, and satisfactory references. Individuals who join The Academy as Clinical Members often become IABMCP Diplomates at some later date when they have fulfilled the more extensive criteria for Diplomate Status.

Student Membership
This is the third category of membership. Student Membership is available to both graduate and undergraduate students majoring in a relevant field (i.e., psychology, social work, counseling, pre-med, etc.) who have demonstrated a record of academic excellence. Generally, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is required. Two satisfactory faculty references are required, as is a statement of future goals. Any honors, awards, extracurricular activities, community service, etc. are helpful. Each application is carefully considered and evaluated based upon its individual merits.
