
Although The Academy's goals and objectives are continually being evaluated and may vary over time, they generally include the following:
- To continually promote the highest standards of professional excellence in the areas of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling, Psychotherapy and Chemical Dependency Counseling

To award Certificates of Diplomate Status in Behavioral Medicine, Counseling, Psychotherapy and Chemical Dependency Counseling to those qualified professionals who voluntarily apply for such Certificates and to maintain a record of holders of such Certificates
- To educate the public as to the meaning, purpose, nature and benefits of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
- To assist individuals seeking consultation/treatment in locating appropriate practitioners
- To encourage and/or conduct empirical research concerned with evaluating the effectiveness of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling – and with ways to increase their effectiveness
- To serve as an international forum for an exchange of ideas among professionals of all theoretical orientations and approaches
- To attempt to assure that IABMCP Diplomates are always recognized as leaders in the fields of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
- To monitor important developments in the areas of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
