Although The Academy's goals and objectives are continually being evaluated and may vary over time, they generally include the following:

  • To continually promote the highest standards of professional excellence in the areas of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling, Psychotherapy and Chemical Dependency Counseling
  • To award Certificates of Diplomate Status in Behavioral Medicine, Counseling, Psychotherapy and Chemical Dependency Counseling to those qualified professionals who voluntarily apply for such Certificates and to maintain a record of holders of such Certificates

  • To educate the public as to the meaning, purpose, nature and benefits of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
  • To assist individuals seeking consultation/treatment in locating appropriate practitioners
  • To encourage and/or conduct empirical research concerned with evaluating the effectiveness of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling – and with ways to increase their effectiveness
  • To offer and/or publicize high quality educational/training programs dealing with any relevant topics relating to behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling

  • To serve as an international forum for an exchange of ideas among professionals of all theoretical orientations and approaches
  • To attempt to assure that IABMCP Diplomates are always recognized as leaders in the fields of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
  • To monitor important developments in the areas of behavioral medicine, counseling, psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling
